Max Hirshovitz is killed in action in France.

He is killed by an enemy shell near the town of Trugny, France, Born to a Jewish family in Russia, Hirshovitz later lived at 45 Irving Street and then 47 Wall Street. He applied for citizen ship and enlisted in the U.S. army in 1917, and served with the 26th (“Yankee”) Division. The city of Boston approves the Hero Square for Hirshovitz at the junction of Derne Street, Hancock Street, and Myrtle Street on September 16, 1921.
